I had to get my shots for our trip yesterday... yellow fever, typhoid and my Hep A booster. Of course I was on my own with all these shots (well not exactly my mum came with me and Eli), but Gerdi has decided he is above all jungle diseases found in Paraguay and doesn't need any vaccines! TYPICAL! But I refuse to argue because I know he won't budge on his position... is it just my husband who is anti-doctor/preventative medicine? Personally, I think he's whacked for not taking precautions. But, to give him credit, he has been to Paraguay a number of times and has never fallen ill. Financially speaking it may have been better for him not to partake - $229 later!! Good thing Hep A is for life and the other two last for 10 years! Elijah was not old enough to get ANY shots, which sort of scares me... we can only be vigilant while we're there by protecting him from the sun, mosquitoes (which could carry yellow fever) and food/water (that'll be easy seeing as he only gets mamma's milk at this point). He's still too young for sunscreen and deet mosquito repelent too. For the most part we're staying in Asuncion (the capital city), but we will be going North (?) to "the Chaco" to visit some other relatives. I'm pretty sure even the Chaco is not actually jungle any more, but technically it is in the Paraguayan rain forest. So, I'm fairly confident we will be safe... and thankfully, my trust is in the Lord to protect our family as we travel. What a relief that I can fully rely on God and know that He is in control!

Wow - it sounds like an adventure!
ouch!
um, no gerdi is not the only one. alf is anti-medicine (though out of country shots might be different..i'll have to ask), never goes to the doctor, etc. His dad is probably worse though. what's with the anti-medical-treatment thing? is it a paraguayan thing? growing up, i never knew anyone who wouldn't go to the doctor for any reason...until i entered the menno world...?
Hi Sarah:
I thought I'd remind you to pick up memorabilia in Paraguay that you can add to your scrapbook project. So keep your eyes open for brochures etc. Also a map would be a good idea. You could use it as background paper and then highlight or focus on the part of Paraguay you were visiting etc. Just a thought.
Mum
completely understandable. Us Mennos have super duper germ fighting powers. We don't need medicine or doctors; we have borscht and zwieback ;)
