Surgery Day and Update!

Our day begins at 5:20am with Elijah drinking his last bottle of clear liquids, 3 hours prior to his surgery.

A very happy boy on his way to Children's Hospital in Vancouver. He has no idea what's to come...

Waiting to be admitted into the Surgical Day Care ward.

Here we are... You can see Elijah's eye really turning inward in this pic. Hence, the reason for surgery!

Elijah waiting for the nurse in his gown.

Not happy because he wanted to have the camera!!

Mummy holding Elijah while the nurse took his vitals.

Daddy looking cool in his cap and gown. He was the one who went in with Elijah to the operating room to help hold him while he was put under general anesthetic. Mummy was too much of a wimp to do this part!!

Elijah came back from the surgery very groggy and unhappy. It took him a long time to wake up and even then he didn't want to be awake. He was given an extra dose of morphine to help with any pain and discomfort. I went to the recovery room and stayed with him for about 25 minutes. We then transferred to the next recovery room where Gerdi could join us. We waited there for another hour. Then we were allowed to take him home.

He was so wiped out. He slept the entire way home and thankfully didn't vomit. We were told that eye surgeries and anesthetic in general can cause nausea but thankfully he had none - phew!

We were home by 12:30pm! He slept a lot that afternoon and wasn't himself when he was awake, but by 8pm he started to act normally. So it really was quite amazing how quickly he recovered. His eyes are pink and a little goopy/crusty when he wakes up, but otherwise he looks great! I am so thankful that this whole procedure is over and so thankful for modern medicine. His eyes are already looking improved and I was told it could take up to 6 weeks!!

Sarah! What a relief. I'm so glad he's feeling better. It's a sad day, all groggy and snuggly and confused, but it's pretty incredible what doctors can all do -- and in such a short amount of time. Yeah for improving vision. Here's betting in about a year from now, we're in the same boat...!

So glad to hear all is well, great shots of him, specially the before and after, wow! A little man with his little man snuggling him ;)

Love the play by play pictures. So glad your experience was quick, and that Elijah is feeling better. Thanks for the comment on my blog! Maybe if you come for a follow-up appointment we could connect one day.

Poor little guy! It must be nice to know that the surgery is over now. It's never fun to bring a child into the hospital for anything!
I'm just curious if you know what his surgery procedure was called. I used to work in the surgical booking department for an opthalmologist and now I'm always interested in eye stuff :)

Yes, strabismus definitely sounds familiar, though I don't remember booking too many of those - we did mostly cataracts, etc. in adults. Will Elijah need any more surgeries or will this one be it? I hope his recovery goes well!
